We are seeking a highly motivated and exceptional PhD candidate to embark on a groundbreaking research journey focused on developing sustainable surface treatments for natural fibres. This exciting project is a collaborative endeavor between the University of Sheffield and a global leader in natural fibres, offering an unparalleled opportunity to contribute to a more environmentally responsible future.

Natural fibres, with their intricate chemical structures and unique properties, pose distinct challenges for surface modification. This research aims to address these challenges by pioneering eco-conscious treatment methods that enhance performance while minimizing environmental impact. Aligned with the global leader's commitment to sustainability, this project represents a pivotal step towards transforming the industry.

This PhD will delve into the transformative potential of enzymes in biochemical fibre modification. Leveraging cutting-edge techniques in surface characterization, pioneered by the Leggett group and the partner's research division, the research will:

  • Investigate enzyme-mediated transformations: Analyze the role of enzymes in modifying natural fibre surfaces, exploring their potential for sustainable and effective treatments.
  • Develop nanoscale characterization methods: Advance the understanding of fibre surface chemistry and reactivity at the nanometer level using state-of-the-art techniques like atomic force microscopy (AFM), developed at Sheffield. This will be complemented by other techniques such as surface spectroscopic measurements, including X-ray spectroscopy and spectroscopic ellipsometry that are very important techniques to understand the properties of materials and surfaces.
  • Explore fibre-surface interactions: Conduct a comprehensive investigation of interactions occurring at fibre surfaces, examining mechanisms for modifying surface composition, reactivity, morphology, and so on. This will involve linking modifications in fibre surface chemistry with biophysical properties and correlating these with instrumental measurements and consumer perception.

This project offers unique access to the global leader's state-of-the-art research facilities and expertise. The successful candidate will benefit from regular interaction with leading scientists at the global leader's research division, fostering a dynamic and enriching research environment including a placement in the global leader’s laboratories, gaining hands-on experience with cutting-edge technologies and working alongside industry experts.

The global leader's research division has a strong track record of supporting fundamental research through partnerships with academic institutions, resulting in a substantial publication output, and the PhD candidate will be encouraged to disseminate their findings through publications.

This PhD represents a remarkable opportunity for a highly motivated individual who is passionate about sustainability and seeking a challenging yet rewarding research experience. Enquiries should be addresed to the lead project supervisor, Prof Graham Leggett (Graham.Leggett@sheffield.ac.uk), to discuss your interest in and suitability for the project prior to submitting your application. For more information about the Leggett Group's research visit our web page.

The award will fund the full (UK or Overseas) tuition fee and UKRI stipend (currently £19,237 per annum) for 4 years and an industry funded stipend enhancement of £3000 per annum, as well as a research grant to support costs associated with the project (£42500) including funds to support attendance at an international conference and to cover the cost of a three-month placement at the industrial partner.

Applications should be made via our online application form (via the ‘Apply’ button above), quoting studentship C4-MPS-Leggett Revolutionising Sustainable Surface Treatments for Natural Fibres.
