Quantum materials are at the forefront of modern condensed matter physics research, with many outstanding fundamental questions. They host new quasi-particles other than constituent electrons, such as spinons, halons, visions and many more, essentially creating a new material universe awaiting exploration. Moreover, they often have a potential to make useful applications in quantum technologies (e.g., quantum spin-liquid state to build a quantum computer).

Our group aims to realise exotic quantum entangled states in materials through precision tuning with uniaxial strain and a magnetic field. With this particular PhD project, the aim is to realise a quantum spin-liquid state in magnetic insulators while probing them using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (atomic-scale electronic and magnetic probe of matter). The student will have opportunities to learn cryogenic instrumentation (down to sub-kelvin temperatures), sample characterisation with SQUID magnetometer, strain tuning and nuclear magnetic resonance experiments as well as advanced data analyses; these are sought-after skillset in the broad field of quantum materials research as well as emerging quantum technologies industry.

The laboratory is well equipped with state-of-the-art instruments including MPMS-3 (from 0.4 K up to 1000 K, in a field up to 7 T), PPMS (down to 1.8 K in a field up to 9 T), and 11 T NMR systems.

The project will take place in the group of Dr Mingee Chung (https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/staff/profiles/physics/chung-mingee.aspx), which is part of the Condensed Matter Group (https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/research/activity/physics/quantum/condensed-matter/index.aspx) in the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Birmingham.

The Condensed Matter Group comprises four research-active academics with complementary expertise in experimental techniques (uniaxial stress-strain, hydrostatic high pressure, ARPES, etc.) and subjects (quantum magnets, 2D materials, superconductivity and topological materials) with several on-going projects together. Several new PhD students and postdocs will join us shortly as well. The Group is committed to providing all members with an inclusive and intellectually stimulating atmosphere.
