The University of Macau (UM) is an internationalized public comprehensive university in the Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) located at the west bank of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). It may be noted that English is the working language and the primary medium of instruction at UM.
The English Language Centre (ELC) of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH) invites applications for the position of Visiting Instructor (English Language Learning Support). The initial appointment is up to 12 months with a possibility of a second contract upon mutual agreement.
Visiting Instructor (English Language Learning Support) works together with instructors to support the ELC mission of empowering students to succeed in University studies and in life by engaging them in English, academic, and global skills learning. They work mainly in the ELC English Writing and Communication Centre and the English Co-curricular Activity Committee. Both are essential arms of the ELC in providing English language learning support for UM students. The main tasks of the Visiting Instructor (English Language Learning Support) include: a) conducting one-on-one English writing and speaking tutorial sessions in the ELC Writing Centre; b) designing, organizing, and implementing creative educational activities and workshops for students; c) providing support to ELC instructors in the Summer English Programme for pre-sessional students and in regular semesters as needed; d) organizing events and activities in ELC, UM Open Day, and FAH Language & Culture Day, etc.
Qualifications
Applicants must have a Master’s degree from an accredited programme and excellent command of English. Candidates with qualifications in English Education/ELT/TEFL/TESOL will have an advantage. Candidates with some full-time work experience since degree graduation are preferred, as well as experience in project/event management and/or English tutoring/teaching.
The successful candidates should possess the following characteristics: strong initiation and independence in project planning, organization, and execution, conscientiousness and self-motivated, a strong desire to support and nurture students, the ability to build rapport, engage and motivate students, innovative and creative, resourceful and problem solving, outstanding communication and organisational skills and an eye for details, skilled at both working independently and within a team. Skills in IT, social media content creation and promotion, and creative digital multi-media would be an advantage.
The selected candidate is expected to assume duty on 1st August, 2025.
Remuneration
A taxable monthly remuneration starting from MOP21,972 (equivalent to USD2,746) will be commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic qualification and relevant professional experience. Basic medical benefits are available at a low cost. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around 5%-7% after various discretionary exemptions.
