Faculty Environment, Science and Economy
The above full-time NERC funded post is available from 1st April 2025 on a fixed term basis for 2 years in the Faculty to support the work of Claire Belcher and Sarah Chadburn.
The post
The successful applicant will work with a team of researchers from three UK universities to determine the impact of applied wildfire management tools on ecosystem carbon balance in UK fire prone moorland and heathland landscapes and their longer-term influence on carbon-climate feedbacks.
About you
The successful applicant will be able to present information on research progress and outcomes, communicate complex information, orally, in writing and electronically and prepare proposals and applications to external bodies.
Applicants will possess a relevant PhD or possess an equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes.
Applicants will have a background in wildfire and/or landscape modelling, they should be familiar with working in a range of coding environments and will be familiar with different coding languages, particularly FORTRAN. A background in wildfire, particularly understanding the drivers and impacts of wildfires within the UK and modelling UK fire would be ideal. Evidence of existing coded products and publications in the field would be of benefit as this project is relatively short in duration, thus needs a high level of background skill from the onset.
