About the role

The Security Architecture function sits within IT Services (ITS), ensuring solutions are delivered within University risk appetite whilst still facilitating organisational goals. It operates at technology, solution and enterprise level as necessary, working with all departments to provide consistent security assurance and ongoing security maturity.

The Head of Security Architecture and Engineering will be responsible and accountable for providing enterprise-wide architectural and engineering solutions.  They will provide a clear vision and strategic direction for the University’s IT security architecture, ensuring that solutions are always ‘secure by design’. They will be a member of the divisional leadership team, providing strategic direction and ensuring the security of our services.

The person

You’ll have significant experience of working across organisational boundaries and managing the needs of a complex map of stakeholders. You’ll have previously architected and designed technical systems and services to mitigate security risks, particularly with cloud-based environments. As the Head of Security Architecture and Engineering at The University of Manchester, you will be immersed in several key IT programmes having a direct impact on the current and future iterations of architectural and engineering solutions.

You’ll also have:

  • Established security architecture policies, standards and design patterns.
  • Developed security architecture artifacts (e.g. models, templates, guidance and procedures) that can be used to optimise security considerations in projects and operations.
  • Experience leading a team of people, managing their priorities in line with the strategic direction and organisational requirements
  • Participated in application, infrastructure and cyber projects to provide advice on security design and planning.
  • Capable of interacting with and influencing senior stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of new technological trends and security threats and their impact on cyber security architecture and operations. 
  • Led quality assurance reviews and evaluations of the design and operational effectiveness of security controls.
  • Conducted research and made recommendations on products, services, protocols, and standards in support of all cyber security procurement and development efforts.
  • Experience with methodologies like agile and waterfall.
  • An understanding of feasibility planning for new and existing services.
