The University of Aberdeen is committed to the Scottish Clinical Research Excellence Development Scheme (http://www.scotmt.scot.nhs.uk/specialty/scottish-academic-training-(screds).aspx) and the long-term aim of nurturing and developing future clinical academic leaders.
Accordingly, the School of Medicine, Medical Sciences and Nutrition, with NHS Education for Scotland (NES) is pleased to offer an exciting opportunity for a higher specialty trainee in General Surgery wishing to pursue such an academic career.
You will join a committed and enthusiastic team of clinicians, researchers and educators, providing an excellent opportunity to develop clinical academic expertise through a planned programme of specialty training ensuring clinical, academic and personal development. The post holder will be located on the Foresterhill site.
A start date of August 2025 is envisaged.
An 80:20 split in clinical training/research time is envisaged over the duration of the post, with a maximum of 20% training time being allowed for academic activity during specialty training. It is intended that this time would be used to further engage in the research activities within general surgery and/or to prepare an application for seeking further funding opportunity at clinical post-doctoral level, such as intermediate fellowship or independent project grants. The successful applicant will have already obtained or at least submitted a relevant surgical PhD/MD, so that the post holder will seek funding opportunities to further their career towards senior academic level (Senior Lecturer) on completion of training.
Salary will be at the appropriate point on the salary scale for clinical academics below the level of consultant (£48,288 - £79,047 per annum) and negotiable with placement according to clinical experience.
Informal enquiries should be made to Professor Angus Watson, Clinical Chair in Surgery
