The Department of Philosophy is looking to appoint a Teaching Associate in Philosophy, with expertise in at least one area of ethics (broadly construed). Though not an exhaustive list, this may include, for instance, applied ethics, normative ethics, metaethics, moral psychology, history of ethics, and relevant aspects of social and political philosophy.

We are inclusive, welcoming, and caring, and pride ourselves on our positive community. Diversity is vital to our success and fundamental to our values, and we want to continue to tackle issues faced by underrepresented groups in Philosophy. You will be able to demonstrate an ability to make a positive difference in this regard. We are particularly keen to receive applications from people who are currently underrepresented in the field.

Shortlisting is anonymous (by criteria-based questions rather than CV or letter): we cannot see any personal data or the ‘Additional Information’ section in your application until shortlisting is completed.

About the role:

You will convene and teach our undergraduate Level 1 module ‘Mind, Knowledge, and Ethics’ (ethics component), which introduces students to ideas, theories, and arguments in ethics. You will also convene and teach our Level 4 postgraduate module ‘Ethics’, which supports students in advanced study of contemporary debates in ethics. You will be responsible for assessment in each module, marking coursework for the Level 4 module, and exams for the Level 1 module.

Course materials from previous years will be available for both modules. They can be reviewed, edited or adapted to suit your own vision for each module.

You will have an excellent track record of delivering quality teaching to undergraduate students. You will have teaching experience in ethics. You must have a PhD already awarded (or to be awarded by time of appointment) in Philosophy.

The well-being and development of our students is of utmost importance to us, so the successful candidate will take a proactive role in the pastoral support of students. You will also be responsible for a reasonable share of departmental administration, and the ability to collaborate effectively with others is essential. You will be expected to engage in professional development related to teaching and engage with local and national teaching developments.

This post will be offered on a part-time (29hrs per week), fixed term contract, commencing 13 January 2025 or soon as thereafter, until 15 June 2025.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Dr Craig French, Head of Department, email: Craig.French@nottingham.ac.uk; please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
