The Scottish Fish Immunology Research Centre (SFIRC), within the School of Biological Sciences, undertakes fundamental and applied research to enhance current knowledge of fish physiology. We focus on immunology, new or improved therapeutic approaches to combat fish disease, and nutrition research to improve fish health and welfare. Working closely with the aquaculture industry, a key area of our focus is on the molecular and functional underpinnings of immune modulation in Atlantic salmon, particularly during the parr-smolt transformation. To better understand how light throughout production influences fish performance, the advertised position will investigate how photoperiodic entrainment influences the immune response and disease resilience of farmed Atlantic salmon. The work will involve fish trials using state-of-the-art aquarium facilities within the school and functional genomic approaches, including use of a recently established high throughput immune gene expression profiling (fluidigm) platform.

The successful candidate will join a thriving research community within the Scottish Fish Immunology Research Centre and within the wider community of the school.

The post will be based in the School of Biological Sciences. The work will investigate how photoperiod influences the immune response in farmed Atlantic salmon and will involve both fish trials and gene expression analysis. The successful candidate will join a thriving research community within the Scottish Fish Immunology Research Centre, located within the school.

Salary will be at the appropriate point on Grade 6, £37,999 - £41,421 per annum with placement according to qualifications and experience.
