Principal/Senior Personnel Safety Engineer

Diamond Light Source is one of the world’s most advanced scientific facilities. We’re home to the UK’s synchrotron light source – a giant microscope producing beams of light 10 billion times brighter than the sun. Probing the structure and composition of matter, our work drives innovation in everything from vaccines to nanotech.

At Diamond we are currently undertaking a major upgrade of the facility, known as Diamond-II. Diamond-II will combine a new machine and new beamlines with a comprehensive series of upgrades to optics, detectors, sample environments, sample delivery capabilities and computing, which will ultimately generate an even more brilliant light source at a higher energy.

About the Role
We now have an opportunity for a Principal/Senior Personnel Safety Engineer to join the team. You will be responsible for the design, development, commissioning, and operational support of high integrity Personnel Safety Systems used to protect people from the hazards produced by Beamlines and Accelerators within Diamond.

Other responsibilities will include:

  • Leading the design and develop the High Integrity Safety Systems to protect staff, user and public from the radiation hazards across Diamond.
  • Applying technical know-how on active safety systems to ensure that developed systems meet the goals of required safety integrity level.
  • Managing stakeholders, through all stages of the project Safety Systems life cycle; including Engineers, Scientists and Directors on requirements, project progress, and correctness of operation of Personnel Safety Systems.
  • Developing and maintaining a design process for High Integrity Safety Systems in Diamond that ensures compliance with international standards & regulations for safety systems.

Applicants will be considered at either Senior or Principal level, depending on the strength of your skills, experience and qualifications.

About You
You will hold a relevant STEM Degree and a recognised high level functional safety certification such as TUV or equivalent. 

You should display good communication, interpersonal and analytical skills, with Self-motivation and the ability to work as part of a team.

You will demonstrate experience or knowledge in the following:

  • Working with standards, particularly EN61508, EN61511 & BS62061.
  • Undertaking Fault tree analysis and FMEA and understanding its importance.
  • Hazard identification, particularly in high energy physics environments or similar.
  • Specifying, creating and verifying Safety hardware for safety systems.

To be considered for the principal position you will also have:

  • Extensive practical experience in the full life cycle of Safety Systems applied to industrial or scientific applications, including requirements capture, designing, commissioning, fault finding and operational support.
  • Knowledge of Personnel safety regulations for radiation environments, current legislation and relevant standards, best practice and HSE guidance.
  • Appreciation of modern software techniques for real-time control, feedback and signal processing.
  • Experience in developing and managing software and/or system configuration through a structured release environment.
  • Experience of fully life cycle management to achieve overall system quality, operational reliability and total cost of ownership.

You must also be willing to work occasional overtime at unsociable hours as required, travel in the UK and abroad, including occasional periods away from home, and you will be prepared to undertake further training if required.
