PhD Studentship: Qualitative Theory of Large Open Quantum Structures

Loughborough University - School of Science, Department of Physics

Qualification Type: PhD
Location: Loughborough
Funding for: UK Students, EU Students, International Students

Large-scale quantum structures are necessary for the implementation of quantum technology, yet their complexity exceeds the computational limits of classical simulations. This PhD project will focus on advancing a qualitative theory for these large quantum systems, aiming to establish essential Figures of Merit (FoM), universal dimensionless parameters, which control transitions between qualitatively different regimes of operations of these structures. Such criteria will provide a framework for characterising, optimising, and ensuring the reliable operation of large quantum structures, opening pathways to new levels of quantum capability .

Ideal Candidate:

  • Strong background in theoretical and/or computational quantum physics, quantum statistical physics, mathematical physics
  • Interest in alternative quantum computing methodologies
  • Interest in close collaboration with experimentalists and engineers
  • Enthusiasm for collaborative, international research
  • Good communication skills
