The University of Birmingham is ranked in the top 100 universities globally, and home to a diverse community of over 38,000 students from 150 countries and more than 8,000 staff. Our heritage as Britain’s first civic university combines with an ambitious contemporary agenda to continue our transformation and growth and deepen our impact. We are a hugely diverse, dynamic community at the heart of a dynamic and thriving city-region. Building on this, our Birmingham 2030 Strategic Framework sets a highly ambitious strategy to become a global top 50 institution by 2030.
As one of five Colleges which constitute the University, the College of Medicine & Health comprises three Schools. The Birmingham Medical School is located primarily in the School of Medical Sciences while drawing on strengths from across the whole College. We are shaping the future of health and medicine through the provision of innovative and inclusive education, which includes collaborations with 11 NHS partner Trusts, Birmingham Health Partners, funders and beneficiaries. The Medical School is one of the largest in the UK, home to 2,000 undergraduate medicine programme students and sits alongside Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing & Midwifery, Physiotherapy, Social Work and Biomedical Science at the University. In research, we ranked 6th for power in Clinical Medicine in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework. Our citations in medicine rank 33rd in the world, and we host a greater variety of NIHR infrastructure than any other university. In recent years, our annual research awards have topped £100M. Our work changes lives across the world from basic science to global health.
We are seeking an outstanding candidate to lead our flagship MBChB Medicine & Surgery programme. The postholder will work closely with senior figures in the College’s line management, including the Head of the School of Medical Sciences, College Director of Education and Pro-Vice-Chancellor & Head of College. The successful candidate will deliver major strategic leadership for this important degree programme, including the continued development and implementation of a new contemporary curriculum, enhancing clinical practice. They will bring an excellent national reputation and profile based on an extensive track record, including developing and enhancing teaching and learning, impacting positively on the student experience. They will be confident in managing complex yet positive relationships within the College and University, and externally with NHS partners and stakeholders such as the General Medical Council and the Medical Schools Council. The successful candidate will be an effective, enthusiastic senior leader and role model in citizenship, equality, diversity and inclusion, focussed on driving improvement, for instance in our current 24th rank in the Complete University Guide 2024 and National Student Survey results.
The Programme Director will possess an excellent reputation in medical education and a commitment to research; they will also have proven leadership and management credentials with an inclusive, collaborative approach. A medical qualification (MBChB/MBBS) is essential and, a higher qualification such as a PhD or equivalent qualification, is desirable.
