Role Summary

We are recruiting a Clinical Research Fellow as a PhD student in the area of paediatric oncology. The appointee will be registered on the ‘The Azaylia Childhood Cancer PhD Programme’, with funding available for up to 4 years. The appointee will undertake project-specific research and training in this area as part of an established academic team on the following project:

Project: Identifying therapeutic vulnerabilities in paediatric AML harbouring KMT2A rearrangements.

Supervised by Dr Paloma Garcia.

In this project, the candidate will be investigating how different KMT2Ar mutations found in paediatric patients affect treatment response.

The main objective is to produce international quality research data and present a thesis for PhD viva voce examination. This post aligns with current strategy in the Department of Cancer and Genomic Sciences to strengthen in the areas of clinical oncology and translational cancer research in Birmingham. It is an expectation that the appointee will help establish stronger links between the Birmingham Children’s Hospital and The University of Birmingham and enhance, directly, translational research capacity within the Department.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience

  • Medical degree, (optional) membership of one of the Royal Colleges
  • Appropriate levels of medical training (ST1-ST4) with an interest in haematology, oncology, paediatric haematology or similar area
  • Possesses Research experience in a wet lab setting
  • Possesses sufficient breadth and depth of specialist knowledge to undertake both clinical responsibilities and research within established research programmes
