The School of Physics & Astronomy is seeking to recruit an enthusiastic, experienced and self-motivated individual who has the ability to provide first-class engineering technical support within its large and versatile Mechanical Workshop.
The Opportunity:
This position offers an excellent opportunity to apply and expand your already well-established mechanical engineering skills, in direct support of the research and teaching activities of the School and the collaborative Centre for Science at Extreme Conditions (CSEC).
You will be able to demonstrate excellent levels of accuracy in the precision machining of a full range of engineering materials, including exotic alloys and ceramics, using both manual and multi-axis CNC machine tools. An ability to apply novel solutions to complex and challenging engineering problems is essential to this role, as too is a willingness to learn new and advanced skills and specialist techniques.
In addition to machining skills, you will have a good understanding of computer aided design (CAD), sheet metal work and the ability to undertake work requiring the use of a range of welding and other thermal processes.
With a level of autonomy commensurate with the grading of this post, you will be expected to engage directly with a variety of other staff and students in the design, manufacture, construction and commissioning of a vast array of experimental scientific equipment and laboratory apparatus to meet the ever-evolving needs of the School’s research and teaching activities.
You are expected to have an HNC or equivalent qualification in an appropriate engineering subject, and have a significant amount of vocational experience in a technical or engineering role, preferably within the Higher Education sector.
This post is full-time (35 hours per week), however, we are open to considering flexible working patterns.
The School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Edinburgh is committed to encouraging equality and diversity among our workforce, and eliminating discrimination. The School strives to create a more diverse, equitable and inclusive workplace for all and we are looking to actively diversify our staff.
