National Eczema Society (NES) is excited to announce its first-ever Research Grant Call, inviting UK-based researchers to apply for a fully-funded PhD Studentship. This prestigious opportunity is aimed at advancing eczema knowledge through research.

The PhD Studentship will support an emerging exceptional researcher to undertake groundbreaking studies investigating eczema. Candidates are expected to contribute valuable, novel insights to eczema research, which can lead to real-world improvements in eczema understanding, diagnosis and management.

NES is looking for candidates with the following qualities:

  • Academic excellence: A first-class or upper-second-class undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field (e.g., biology, immunology, biomedicine, epidemiology, population health or related disciplines).
    • A Master's degree in a related subject (or equivalent) is desirable, but not mandatory.
  • Research experience: Ideally, candidates will have a strong background in carrying out research in their respective field. Experience with qualitative and/or quantitative data analysis software and statistical tools is essential.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving: The successful candidate should be able to design experiments, interpret complex data, and approach intellectual challenges with creativity and rigor.
  • Communication skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential. The ability to effectively communicate research findings to a range of different audiences and write scientific papers is a requirement. Experience working in interdisciplinary teams and ability to collaborate effectively with clinicians, laboratory researchers, and other specialists is highly desirable.
  • Self-motivation: Must have a high level of self-motivation, strong time-management and organisational abilities. As well, the ability to work independently on complex research projects and balance multiple research tasks and meet deadlines. A resilient and proactive approach to problem-solving is required.
  • Passion for eczema research: A genuine interest in eczema is necessary. We are looking to support the next generation of world-leading eczema researchers. Candidates must be committed to making a positive difference for people living with eczema.

Areas of Research

Applications are invited across all areas of eczema research including exploring triggers/biological causes of eczema, testing new treatments and methodologies, and investigating ways to improve patient outcomes and quality of life. We especially encourage applications investigating topical steroid withdrawal syndrome.

Who Can Apply?

The PhD Studentship is open to researchers at all stages of their careers, including healthcare professionals interested in transitioning into research. NES is committed to promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion by encouraging applications from applicants of all backgrounds.
