The project explores a revolutionary approach to design and fabricate wearable systems for remote health monitoring. This project can be developed in one of the number of areas depending on the experience of the candidate, including smart materials, soft robotics, sensors, electronic skin, signal acquisition and analysis, or machine learning and AI. This studentship aligns with the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng) Research Fellowship of Dr Dharmasena, and presents unique opportunities for training, skills development and outreach. The project closely relates to UK’s new National Rehabilitation Centre, which the supervisor is part of. Potential applicants are encouraged to contact the supervisor to discuss further details.

Background

Over 1 billion of the global population suffer from disabilities. However, access to rehabilitation care has been a global issue due to lack infrastructure and trained professionals. This has created an unprecedented demand on new technologies for remote monitoring, consultation and training of rehabilitation patients. Remote monitoring of patients’ movements and physiological parameters is challenging due to drawbacks in existing technologies such as high cost, bulkiness, restricted range, and requirement of specialist equipment and expertise. However, recent advances have created a range of efficient, affordable, and real-time wearable technologies for remote health monitoring and motion sensing. Some of these technologies, including triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG), have shown the potential to act as self-powered systems that capture energy required for their operation from natural body movements. Our recent work has created new pathways for wearable and self-powered health monitoring using soft materials and textiles.

Entry requirements:

Applicants should have, or expect to achieve, at least a 2:1 bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in engineering, electronics, robotics, material science, chemistry, computer science, or a related subject.
