Position Overview: The Head of Learning and Teaching will play a crucial role in advancing the Academy’s educational vision. This leadership position involves collaboration with key stakeholders to enhance curriculum quality and promote innovative teaching practices, ensuring that educational standards align with industry and governmental requirements.

Applicants from the UK higher education system are expected to have a clear understanding of Professional Standard Framework of Advance HE. They must hold at least a Senior Fellowship of Higher Education Academy and preferably Principal Fellowship of Higher Education Academy.

Position Title: Head of Learning and Teaching (Ref: 22)
Reports to: Provost and Vice Chancellor Academic
Direct Reports: Head of Library, Lab Coordinator, Educational Technology

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Support the Provost and Vice Chancellor Academic in advancing strategic educational goals.
  2. Lead the Academy’s educational strategy, promoting an innovative curriculum through effective resource use.
  3. Drive academic quality improvement and support digital learning frameworks across departments.
  4. Collaborate with College Deans, Program Heads, and business partners to align programs with maritime industry standards.
  5. Monitor and ensure compliance with UAE Ministry of Education standards for continuous improvement.
  6. Oversee SMA’s digital learning ecosystem for campus, hybrid, and online learning.
  7. Support research-informed educational offerings that meet industry needs.
  8. Cultivate a strong learning and teaching community by providing professional development for academic staff.
  9. Assist in delivering inclusive, high-quality education for students of diverse backgrounds.
  10. Willingness to travel as required and work occasionally beyond standard hours.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:

Essential Qualifications:

  • PhD in Education or a related field
  • Recognized teaching qualification in Higher Education
  • Industry body affiliation/membership

Essential Skills:

  • High-level English communication proficiency
  • Collaborative, culturally sensitive team player
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure

Essential Experience:

  • Expertise in higher education learning and teaching
  • At least 5 years in academic leadership with proven change management success
  • Leadership in large-scale educational improvements
  • Curriculum development and academic support experience
  • Strong knowledge of digital learning technologies

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with UAE Higher Education policies, standards, and practices
