Our department

The Department of Architecture was formally established in 1967, although the teaching of architecture at the origins of the technological institution started in late 1800s. The Department is among the oldest and largest in the UK and enjoys a distinguished international reputation with consistent high performance in league tables and exemplary student employment. The Department captures the University’s ethos as ‘the place of useful learning’ in its vision, mission, and standard pedagogical practice.

Operating at the intersection of art and design, culture and technology, engineering and society, in global and local contexts, our research and teaching addresses the environmental and societal challenges facing the built environment and places emphasis on the opportunities those challenges create. Its vision is to continue to be one of the world leading providers of education and research in sustainable architecture and urban design while contributing effectively to global society and to the welfare of the country. Such a vision is articulated in a mission that attempts to reflect the trans-disciplinary nature of architecture as a profession and as an academic discipline. Through a range of innovative approaches, the Department strives to:

• Produce global graduates who are well equipped and prepared to meet the needs and challenges of the bult environment in the 21st century.
• Enable students to acquire knowledge and skills and implement these in design and practice.
• Excel in design studio teaching and delivery of instruction while promoting a culture of scholarship and life-long learning.
• Create and disseminate knowledge through world class research, knowledge exchange and exemplary practice.
• Advance and apply professional knowledge and expertise through effective international partnerships and service to the profession and society at large.

Climate change, social deprivation as well as decarbonisation of the built environment continue to pose complex interdependent challenges. The design and use of buildings and cities continue to be a major source of not only carbon emissions but also impacts on public health. Interdisciplinary innovation and skills are needed to be developed at pace to deliver a net zero healthy built environment and smart, flexible energy system in line with UK net zero ambitions. The need to design and better manage use of buildings and urban environments to minimise carbon emissions whilst enhancing occupant’s health are now fundamental. We are looking for an early career researcher who is interesting in developing a portfolio of research in areas of health, energy and architecture and who is also able to use this knowledge to inform teaching and practice. We are particularly interested in candidates who have interdisciplinary skills, interest in sustainability innovation, regenerative approaches and nature inspired design.

This post will build on recent Departmental appointments to build substantial world leading expertise in this area in an area of strategic importance for the Institution and Society, and to contribute to the University of Strathclyde Vision 2025 strategy.

We would love to hear from you if you have a PhD and postdoctoral research experience; an emerging publication history in high quality academic journals; and research interests which align with this area of strategic priority – particularly if you already hold an external fellowship that can be transferred to us.

* Your Fellowship will normally be at lecturer level (exceptionally, at senior lecturer (Grade 9) (£58,596 - £65,814) where you have a strong track record in research leadership) for 5 years, with the expectation that you’ll meet our promotion criteria within that period and be transferred to senior lecturer (or, where you’ve been appointed as a senior lecturer, Reader) level.
