Leverhulme Early Career Fellowships in the Humanities

University of Oxford – Humanities Division

The Humanities Division at the University of Oxford is inviting expressions of interest from candidates wishing to apply for a Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowship to be based in one of the participating Humanities Faculties

Deadlines for expressions of interest are set by individual Faculties.  Please refer to the details of the deadlines and application procedures for Oxford Humanities Faculties to check that the Faculty which you are interest in is participating, and for the link to further details about how to submit an expression of interest.  Deadlines for participating Faculties will be in late November or early December 2024.

Candidates should check carefully the detailed guidance for the scheme to ensure you are eligible.  Broadly, the eligibility conditions are:

  • Candidates must have submitted their doctoral thesis for viva not more than four years prior to the application closing date unless they have since had a career break, or will have submitted it by the scheme deadline (4pm on 20 February 2025)
  • Candidates must not yet have held a full-time permanent academic post.
  • Candidates must either hold a degree (any degree) from a UK University at the time of taking up the fellowship, or at the time of the application deadline have been in continuous UK academic employment for more than 4 months.
  • Candidates who have held or currently hold postdoctoral positions to pursue their own independent research totalling 3 or more years are not eligible to apply.
  • The Leverhulme Trust stipulates that candidates who have not already moved institutions in the course of their academic career should nominate a new host University, unless there is clear evidence of academic or personal reasons for remaining at the same University.

Interested candidates should contact a potential mentor in the relevant Humanities Faculty as soon as possible.  Mentors need to be permanent post-holders in the Faculty in question, and all Expressions of Interest must have the agreement and confirmed support from a mentor.

Candidates selected will be provided with support to develop and submit their applications to the Leverhulme Trust by the scheme deadline of 20 February 2025.
