Introduction: Applications are invited for the October 2025 PhD Programme at the Brahmal Institute, a new collaborative research centre at Imperial College to enable blue-sky thinking addressing the adverse environmental impacts of aviation. The successful candidates will join a vibrant world-leading research community that was that was recently assessed in the Research Excellence Framework to have the highest proportion of pioneering researchers in the UK and is  building a sustainable future at the heart of London. All PhD projects fall under Aircraft Design, Operations, and the Natural Environment.

Objectives: Within this unique programme, accepted applicants will be considered for a range of projects concerning Aircraft Design, Operations, and the Natural Environment. The projects will emphasize innovative computational modelling, will aim to reduce environmental impact beyond fuel efficiency, and will provide actionable insights to improve aircraft design or operations for a greener aviation sector. General Information:

  • Duration: 3.5 years
  • Funding: Full coverage of tuition fees. a generous travel budget, and an annual tax-free stipend of £21,237.

Eligibility:

  • These studentships are available to both Home and International students.
  • Having obtained or expect to obtain a 1st class honours Master’s (or higher) degree in Aerospace Engineering or allied disciplines such as Computational Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, or Physics.
  • Ability to develop and apply new concepts while prioritising work in response to deadlines.
  • Creative approach to problem-solving.
  • Ability to organise own work with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent background in numerical methods, and scientific computing.
  • Excellent verbal and written technical communication skills and the ability to write clearly and succinctly for publication
