Job description

Applications are invited for a full-time Research Fellow for a fixed period of 12 months. Based at The Courtauld, the Fellow will join the Conservation Department to work on the GoGreen Project, which develops and promotes preventive and remedial conservation practices based on green principles to spearhead the green revolution within conservation in alignment with the Green Deal. The project is funded by the European Union: https://gogreenconservation.eu/ 

As a small specialist university and home to the largest community of art historians and conservators in the UK, The Courtauld offers a range of degree programmes from BA to PhD in the History of Art, curating and the conservation of easel and wall paintings and is one of the leading centres in the world for education and research in conservation. We run three-year MAs in the conservation of Easel paintings (18 students) and Wall paintings (6-12 students) and a 12-month MA in Buddhist Art History and Conservation (8-10 students, joint with the History of Art department). 

The Role: 

Reporting to the Head of Conservation, this rewarding and varied role is an opportunity for a preventive conservator to undertake advanced research and dissemination as part of the Go Green project, with particular emphasis on Leadership in Green Conservation, as well as Green Preventive Conservation, which includes determining material sensitivities and developing green decision-making frameworks for preventive and remedial conservation of objects.  

You will also act as project-co-ordinator for the Courtauld’s contribution to Go Green, supporting the development of workshops, recruiting participants, liaising with researchers, planning travel and other group activities. You will be an active and visible participant in The Courtauld research community, and represent the Go Green project internally and externally.  

In addition to work on the project, a small proportion of your time will be spent supporting teaching and administration in the Conservation department. This work will primarily be based at Somerset House in London with some European travel and home working possible. 

You will: 

  • Have knowledge of Go Green research strands including advocacy for Greener conservation; greener preventive conservation approaches and greener remedial treatments, and have a passion for making conservation greener. 
  • Have a recognised qualification in conservation or conservation science 
  • Have experience of working as a preventive conservator.  
  • Have experience of project management and working with external partners 
  • Be a good communicator and team player 
  • Be patient, conscientious and able to demonstrate empathy and understanding, particularly when dealing with student issues
