Department

The Department of Archaeology at the University of York is ranked 26th in the world and 5th in the UK in the QS rankings. We are based in both the King’s Manor in the heart of the historic city of York and at Heslington West campus. Role

The post holder will manage light stable isotope analysis operations within the BioArCh labs, overseeing the EA-IRMS instruments and supporting other lab equipment. Key responsibilities include sample preparation, equipment maintenance, lab inductions, and training students and staff. The post holder will work closely with academic and research staff as well as external stakeholders, producing high quality reports to assist in the preparation of peer reviewed publications. They will also handle procurement, update risk assessments, SOPs, and CoSHH forms, and act as a Health and Safety Committee Representative. Reporting to the Senior Technical Manager, the successful candidate will contribute to lab efficiency and have experience in managing resources and small-scale projects. Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • Degree in archaeological science, geochemistry, environmental science or related area, or equivalent relevant experience
  • In-depth and current theoretical and practical knowledge of stable isotope analytical methods and technologies
  • Competent in the operation and maintenance of light stable isotope equipment
  • Experience in training others in lab techniques and use of complex equipment
  • Experience on Sercon and Thermo instrument platforms desirable
  • Experience in operational management of laboratory facilities desirable
