The Medical Research Council (MRC) Biostatistics Unit (BSU) is one of the largest groups of biostatisticians in Europe, and a major centre for research, training and knowledge transfer in biostatistics. We develop, apply and promote innovative statistical and data science approaches to advance biomedical science and human health.  The BSU current research portfolio is organised into five main themes that span the scientific research spectrum from basic science to population health and respond to current scientific needs in biomedicine.

BSU researchers have worked extensively to make inference for complex data accessible to the scientific community and to produce innovative methodology related to trial designs, longitudinal and event history data, precision medicine, causal inference, AI/machine learning, evidence synthesis in public health and statistical genetics and genomics. We are recognised for our strength in Bayesian inference applied to biomedicine and public health.

The MRC Biostatistics Unit at the University of Cambridge provides an ideal place to commence a career in Biostatistics. Our thriving PhD programme is hugely successful and competition for places is high. The BSU's relaxed yet enthusiastic, dedicated and stimulating environment provides students with the essential tools, both in research and transferrable skills, to set them on their way to a successful career as an independent researcher.

We welcome applications from students who wish to apply innovative statistical methods to real biomedical problems in order to deliver key insights into human health and disease. Three or four highly competitive fully funded (covering University fees and stipend) three-year studentships will be available from October 2024. Our departmental funding includes a generous travel and training budget.

The Unit is actively seeking to increase diversity among its doctoral students, including promoting an equitable representation of men and women. The Unit therefore especially encourages applications from under-represented groups, including women and minority ethnic groups.
