Camborne School of Mines

The post will be based in the Camborne School of Mines (CSM), a discipline within the Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences at the University of Exeter’s Penryn Campus in Cornwall. With over 135 years of providing high quality education and state-of-the-art research for the international mining industry, CSM is one of the world’s best known Mining Schools, and has recently expanded its teaching portfolio with the Degree Apprenticeship in Mine Management and a new undergraduate Mining Engineering programme starting next year. This post will support the next generation of delivery of high impact research and innovative mining related education.

The role

The post of Lecturer in Rock Engineering & Geotechnics will contribute to extending the research profile of mining at Exeter, particularly in areas related or complementary to geotechnics and rock mechanics for surface and/or underground operations.

Main Duties

  • To fulfil research, teaching and administration duties as a Lecturer in Rock Engineering & Geotechnics within the Faculty of Environment Science and Economy;
  • To extend the research profile of Camborne School of Mines and related areas, especially in geotechnics & rock engineering attracting and supervising postdoctorate researchers and postgraduate research students, contributing towards the winning of research incomes and undertaking elements of the day to day running of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes;
  • To collaborate with colleagues both within the Faculty and the University of Exeter as a whole in order to develop and support mining & geoscience research and the Faculty’s research programme;
  • To contribute to the general operation of the Faculty as a member of its academic team.

About you

For a Lecturer post you will have:

  • A PhD or equivalent experience in geotechnics and rock engineering;
  • A strong record in attracting funding for research, or demonstrate potential to attract such funding;
  • An active approach to inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary research;
  • Enthusiasm, knowledge, and ability to teach modules in underground and surface excavation design and more widely, as required;
  • Strong connections and/or funded projects with business and community partners;
  • Involvement in projects which develop impact;
  • An understanding of the importance of equality and diversity within an organisation and a commitment to helping create an inclusive culture.
