About the role:

An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering for a Laboratory Technician to provide support for the operation of the Structures Laboratory, facilitating engineering research by designing, building and operating specialist testing rigs, preparing test specimens and providing practical insights.

The post holder will work with the Section’s Structures Lab on the design (for experimentation) and construction of rigs and test samples within the Section’s Workshop facilities on a range of machine tools and fabrication equipment.

This is a full time, permanent appointment and being advertised at two levels depending upon qualifications and experience.  The successful candidate will be matched after the interview process to the relevant grade.

The salary scales are as follows:

Level 3a - £40,201 - £44,722

Level 3b - £45,700 - £55,240

What you would be doing:

You will work within the Structures laboratories to provide support for experimental projects, including basic design, construction, assembly and operation.

You will also assemble component test specimens from small to large scale for evaluation in test rig situations.

Providing support and advice to academics and researchers, you will plan and prioritise work activities with support from the Laboratory Manager.

You will also provide a support service using both traditional and modern workshop skills as required, for the production and modification of equipment for a structure’s laboratory application.

What we are looking for:

  • An HNC or equivalent in an engineering subject is essential/desirable depending upon the level of appointment, together with experience of working in a university workshop/laboratory environment.
  • You will also have practical experience in the use of traditional engineering machines and hand tools and the ability to work from engineering drawings and written instructions.
  • An ability to organise your own workload from a prescribed list of tasks is essential, coupled with the ability to deal with a wide range of people and a flexible attitude towards work and meeting deadlines.
