Research Fellow in Health Economics

Hours: Full Time

Contract Type: Fixed Term Contract up to September 2025 

Background

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and capable researcher to conduct economic analysis as part of the APT-Sepsis study, a multi-national, cluster-randomised trial involving 60 hospitals across Malawi and Uganda. The APT-Sepsis programme, specifically designed for resource-limited settings, aims to change healthcare workers' behaviours to better prevent and manage infections in mothers, ultimately reducing infection-related maternal mortality and severe morbidity. The study will evaluate the programme’s effectiveness in reducing infection-related maternal mortality and severe morbidity, assess its implementation, and determine its cost-effectiveness.

The post-holder will analyse the costs and health outcomes associated with the programme, using resource use, clinical outcomes, and cost data collected from the study. The post-holder will be based in the Health Economics Unit in the Department of Applied Health Sciences.

Role Summary

The post holder will have a knowledge and experience of health economics in order to undertake a trial-based economic evaluation as appropriate and carry out appropriate analyses.

Main Duties

• Review and critically appraise relevant economic literature
• Identify and collect appropriate cost data
• Estimate costs and conduct a trial-based economic evaluation
• Analyse and interpret research data as directed 
• Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding
• Contribute to developing new models, techniques and methods 
• Support the writing of reports and papers for publication
• Support the dissemination of research findings
• Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research
• Contribute to writing bids for research funding
• Supervise students on research related work and provide guidance to PhD students where appropriate to the discipline
• Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines
• Undertake management/administration arising from research
• To a limited degree, support the HEU teaching programme, particularly in relation to the Masters programme in Health Economics and Health Policy/Econometrics
• Support any other appropriate activities that will help to achieve the objectives of the Health Economics Unit
• Contribute to enterprise, business development and/or public engagement activities of manifest benefit to the College and the University.

Person Specification

• A Masters degree in Health Economics and preferably a PhD (or one near to completion in Health Economics) 
• Evidence of a high level of quantitative skills for health economic analysis
• Very good writing skills
• Good knowledge of health economics and research methods and techniques
• Practical experience of statistical analysis of data including regression analysis
• Familiarity with STATA
• Ability to work to fixed deadlines
• Ability to work as a member of a team
• Ability to communicate complex information clearly
• Very good communication skills and confidence to deal with senior researchers and external project partners at project meetings and dissemination events
• Fluency in health economics methods and ability to contribute to developing methods
• Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively 
• Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
• Contribute to the planning and organising of the specified research projects and the future research programme
