The opportunity:

This exciting position is supporting the new Centre for Net Zero High Density Buildings (CeNZ-HighDB) within the Green Materials, Building Performance and Building Archetypes by contributing with the research and development, outreach and industry partner collaboration across a portfolio of projects. A primary aim of the Centre is to accelerate the green economy outcomes and impacts for the built environment and construction sector to deliver net zero.

Supporting the development of projects under the Green Materials, Building Performance and Building Archetypes TWG of the Centre, the role holder will help to deliver funded projects between the university and industry partners, within the remit of the TWG. The post-holder will report to the TWG Academic Lead to develop projects that involve the thermal performance of buildings, including energy efficiency, green thermal materials and products, carbon emission reduction methods and delivery initiatives in the retrofit of existing buildings through the archetype approach. This PDRA post, is contracted by the School of Engineering and based at the Edinburgh Futures Institute (EFI) aligned to the Centre for Future Infrastructure (CFI). The individual will work in close collaboration with other PDRA’s of different TWG’s of the Centre to form a research and management community.

This post is full-time (35 hours per week) over 46 months, however, we are open to considering part-time or flexible working patterns. We are also open to considering requests for hybrid working (on a non-contractual basis) that combines a mix of remote and regular on-campus working.

Your skills and attributes for success:

  • Experience in Scottish/ UK building methods of construction, including heritage and conservation typologies,
  • Knowledge in the thermal performance of building components, materials and products,
  • Appreciation of the research and development of green materials and products, primarily for use in the reduction of heat loss in buildings,
  • Ability to collaborate in a research and project management capacity with Scottish and/ or UK companies,
  • Experience in the carbon emissions and energy reduction methods in existing buildings built in Scotland/ UK.
