University of Warwick

Qualification Type: PhD
Location: Coventry
Funding for: UK Students, EU Students, International Students
Funding amount: The standard UKRI rate
Hours: Full Time
Placed On: 1st November 2024

Applications are invited for up to two PhD positions in Statistical Theory and Methodology at the Department of Statistics, University of Warwick. The successful applicants will be supervised by Dr. Thomas Berrett as part of his 1.5M Euro ERC-funded project HeDiStat: Statistical theory and methodology for the combination of heterogeneous and distributed data.

These studentships will be based at the University of Warwick, where the Department of Statistics is one of the largest and most diverse statistics groups in the world. During their first year successful applicants will take part in the activities of the Warwick Statistics Centre for Doctoral Training, where they will interact with a large group of students and academics across the department, while working with Dr. Berrett and his group throughout the four-year programme.

Applicants should have an interest and background in statistics and/or mathematics, though this can be interpreted broadly to include fields such as theoretical computer science and data science. Familiarity with topics such as nonparametric and high-dimensional statistics, differential privacy, distributed learning, semi-supervised learning, missing data and causal inference is desirable though not essential.

A stipend is offered at the standard UKRI rate and successful applicants will also have access to a Research Training and Support fund of at least £5,000 to cover computing equipment and the costs of travelling to conferences and other academic visits.

Eligibility

All applicants should have, or expect to obtain, undergraduate degrees (such as bachelor's plus master's or four-year integrated master's) in mathematics or statistics, or in a subject containing a substantial mathematical component. The minimum entry requirement is a 2:1 class degree or equivalent grades from universities outside the UK. Research experience through a dissertation or extended project in a relevant field is desirable.

We welcome students of all genders, ethnicities, races, sexual orientations, abilities, and socio-economic backgrounds.

How to Apply

Applicants should apply directly via the University of Warwick admissions portal. In the Funding section of the application form, please select ‘Other’ in the ‘Name of Award’ box, and ensure that you quote ‘HeDiStat’ in the Personal Statement. In the Research Proposal section, please also include ‘HeDiStat’ in the ‘Area of research interest’ box and ‘Dr Thomas Berrett’ in the ‘Proposed Supervisor’ box. For more information on submitting an application, please see https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/sci/statistics/postgrad/centre-for-doctoral-training/how-to-apply.

To be considered for these positions, please apply by Friday 31st January 2025. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted to attend an interview after this date.

Informal enquires are strongly encouraged to Thomas Berrett (tom.berrett@warwick.ac.uk).
