About the role

We are seeking a Centre Manager to help us organise and deliver the TARGET Centre for Doctoral Training. This exciting opportunity involves leading the day-to-day management and strategic direction of the Centre, a collaborative effort between leading universities, research organisations, and industrial partners. You will play a key role in recruiting and supervising PhD researchers, while also delivering cutting-edge training and professional development for early-career scientists and professionals in the mineral resources sector.

In addition to overseeing the operations of the Centre, the role offers an exciting opportunity to engage with the UK’s mineral resources research community. You will foster collaborations across academia, industry, and public sector to develop new research initiatives and secure additional funding. The role also involves contributing to the University’s School of Geography, Geology, and the Environment by providing high-quality teaching and research support.

You will join a UK-wide community of mineral resources researchers in academia, industry and the public sector. You would be working in a collaborative research environment, and you would have opportunities to drive new research initiatives, for the benefit of TARGET, TARGET partners, and for the hosting Centre for Sustainable Research Extraction and School of Geography, Geology and the Environment at the University of Leicester.

About TARGET

TARGET is the Training and Research Group for Energy Transition Mineral Resources, and is a UKRI NERC-funded Centre for Doctoral Training. This £2.4m programme will support up to 36 PhD researchers over three intake cohorts, delivering cutting edge research on mineral resources, critical minerals, ESG, exploration, minerals engineering and mineral systems science. The TARGET programme will support researchers through a thematic training and CPD programme to build the skills and expertise necessary for diverse career pathways related to the mining sector. TARGET is a collaborative network of 16 universities and research institutions, working with industry, government and civil society partners. It is led by the University of Leicester.

About you

With a PhD in a relevant discipline such as geoscience, environmental science, or mineral engineering, you will have a track record of delivering internationally recognised research. You will have experience in managing collaborative research projects and have the ability to secure and manage research funding. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential, as you will be required to build and maintain relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.

In addition to your technical expertise, you will be able to demonstrate a passion for inspiring the next generation of researchers. Experience in teaching or delivering training is highly desirable, as is practical experience in mineral resources work, whether in academic or industrial settings. You will thrive in a team environment but also have the initiative to work independently when required. If you are passionate about driving innovation in the mineral resources field and contributing to a world-class academic community, we would love to hear from you.
