British Antarctic Survey – Polar Oceans

Description

The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is looking for three ice and ocean modellers to join our Polar Oceans and Ice Dynamics teams.

You’ll join an interdisciplinary team of glaciologists and oceanographers working closely together to improve our understanding of the evolving ice and ocean dynamics in West Antarctica, and to assess what the future might hold for this region in a warming world. You’ll help us to deliver exciting and impactful scientific research on one of the biggest questions facing society: how much and how fast will the West Antarctic Ice Sheet contribute to global sea-level rise?

For the Ocean Modeller role, we are looking for someone to run high-resolution simulations of the ocean beneath floating ice shelves in the Amundsen Sea. The research is focussed on understanding the role of complex ice topography on melting, and the project is joint with turbulence experts at the University of Cambridge, and observationalists at BAS.

For the Ice/Ocean Modeller role, we want someone to run ice-sheet models and coupled ice-ocean models to assess the possibility that ice loss in the Amundsen Sea sector has passed a tipping point and is now committed to substantial future change. This forms part of a UK-wide project focussed on tipping points in Antarctica and Greenland.

For the Ice Sheet Modeller role, we are looking for someone to combine physics-based ice-sheet models with advanced experimental or modelling techniques to better constrain forecasts of ice loss from the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. This could include process-based modelling of ice dynamics and/or machine learning and emulation. The postholder would be welcome to join our existing collaboration between the Ice Dynamics team and the BAS AI lab.
