Bocconi University - The PhD School

Within the PhD School at Bocconi University, the 4-year PhD program in Statistics and Computer Science is a high profile and rigorous doctoral program that develops strong mathematical, statistical, computational and programming backgrounds.

The program features two curricula: Statistics and Computer Science. Candidates may apply either to a single curriculum or to both curricula.

The first year includes shared and curriculum-specific courses that are compulsory for all enrolled PhD students. They develop a wide range of methodological and computational skills that are essential for research in the chosen curriculum. The second year features advanced monographic courses (for the Statistics curriculum) and reading groups (for the Computer Science curriculum) that showcase frontier research carried out by Faculty members who are international leaders in their fields. Dedicated mentorship is offered to students throughout their time at Bocconi. Multidisciplinary interchange with other graduate programs in Bocconi’s PhD School, as well as research experience abroad, are also encouraged. 

The Faculty includes internationally acknowledged top researchers in Statistics, Computer Science, Decision Theory, Statistical Physics and Machine Learning. The program also benefits from contributions of authoritative visiting professors who deliver short monographic courses. 

The PhD in Statistics and Computer Science is designed for highly motivated students who wish to undertake first-rate research careers in academia, research institutes and industry. Career opportunities also include central banks, financial institutions, governments and international organizations, and public health institutions. 

Highly qualified and motivated students with MSc degrees in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Data Science, Economics, Physics, Engineering and related areas, as well as other quantitatively-oriented fields, are encouraged to apply for admission. 

Applications can be submitted by candidates of any citizenship who:

  • Have completed or are completing their graduate studies and
  • Have at least a “proven” B2 (CEFR) level of competence in English 

For the PhD in Statistics and Computer Science, the PhD School offers:

  • A maximum of 7 places with a fellowship (4 for the curriculum in Statistics and 3 for the curriculum in Computer Science);
  • 1 place with a merit-based tuition waiver covering up to 100% of tuition fees 

Tuition fees for students without a fellowship or tuition waiver amount to €15,000 for year 1 and 2 and €5,000 for year 3 and 4.

A minimum of 60 total points out of 100 is required to be eligible for admission to the program.
