The School of Engineering, Institute for Integrated Micro and Nano Systems (IMNS) at the University of Edinburgh is accepting applications for a Nanoelectronics characterisation laboratory manager. The position will be based at the King’s Buildings Campus and will commence as soon as possible.

The appointee will be part of a large interdisciplinary team lead by the Regius Chair of Engineering Prof Themis Prodromakis and will be affiliated with the Centre for Electronics Frontiers (CEF).

This post will specifically involve the management of our Nanoelectronics Characterisation laboratory located in the King’s Building Campus which focuses on electrical and structural characterisation of semiconductors and thin films. Laboratory equipment includes Semiconductor Testing Analysers, Vector Network Analysers (VNA), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and X-Ray diffractometers (XRD) as well as ancillary equipment.

The Opportunity:

  • The appointee will primarily be responsible for day-to-day support of the tools and equipment of the CEF laboratories and will oversee commissioning and installation of new equipment.
  • They will perform training and inductions for new users and manage access to the facility laboratories.
  • Conduct standardised electrical testing procedures and do basic statistical analysis on the results.
  • Interact closely with researchers and PhD students towards designing new or optimising and automating existing experimental setups for DC and RF measurements on emerging electron devices, TFTs as well as general material characterisation for semiconductors and thin films.
  • Act as an internal and external consultant, advising on the development and application of specialist techniques and/or procedures and the analysis and interpretation of results.
  • Collaborate with researchers and PhD students towards publishing original research.

Your skills and attributes for success:

  • A good undergraduate degree and an MSc or PhD in Electronics/Physics/Chemistry/Material Science/Engineering or a clearly related area, with a focus on instrumentation or a closely related area.
  • Experience on DC/RF electrical characterisation of semiconductor and thin film on device and/or material level.
  • Experience with analytical and structural techniques such as AFM, XRD and SEM/EDX.
  • Knowledge of measurement automation and basic programming skills (LabView, Python or similar).
