About Us
Diamond Light Source is one of the world’s most advanced scientific facilities. We’re home to the UK’s synchrotron light source – a giant microscope producing beams of light 10 billion times brighter than the sun. Probing the structure and composition of matter, our work drives innovation in everything from vaccines to nanotech.
At Diamond we are currently undertaking a major upgrade of the facility, known as Diamond-II. Diamond-II will combine a new machine and new beamlines with a comprehensive series of upgrades to optics, detectors, sample environments, sample delivery capabilities and computing, which will ultimately generate an even more brilliant light source at a higher energy.
About the Role
We now have an opportunity for a Data Analysis Scientist to contribute directly to the delivery of scientific experiments in one of the most varied and interesting experimental techniques at Diamond: X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy. You will join our data analysis group, a team of scientists and engineers who work closely with beamline staff, support groups and international collaborators to develop world-leading tools and algorithms, as well as the open-source infrastructure which underpins the near real-time delivery of pertinent scientific results to our users.
As part of the Diamond-II upgrade, we are building on the success of the Spectroscopy Group by creating a new high temporal resolution beamline optimized for the study of samples under operando conditions – SWIFT. Rapid feedback from tightly integrated data analysis will be essential to support this. Your role will be to contribute to the development of these systems, working closely with scientists and engineers in other teams to ensure that scientific results will be returned in a timely manner whilst handling the large increase in data volumes.
About You
You will have an appropriate first degree or equivalent qualification, and a PhD / second degree in a relevant science or engineering area, as well as an interest in supporting scientific research coupled with strong analytical and communication skills.
Experience in the following areas is essential:
Benefits
Diamond offers an exceptional benefits package to support staff in achieving a positive work/life balance. This includes 26 days annual leave plus Christmas closure, public holidays, 2 annual volunteering days and flexible working hours. We also offer an excellent defined benefit pension scheme. Staff also have access to a range of amenities on site including a nursery, cafes, a restaurant and sports and leisure facilities. A relocation allowance may also be available where applicable.
