 About the Roles

IGS is currently leading a consortium as the Technical Partner of the Saudi Geological Survey for a program to acquire geological data for the Arabian Shield. This program is the largest of its kind that includes detailed geological mapping of the Arabian Shield, a geochemical survey, an airborne geophysical survey and the establishment of a National Geological Database (NGD) and a National Core Library (NCL). Our role is to provide quality control of all geodata acquired by various international contractors to ensure it meets international standards and complies with the agreed technical specifications. This is a unique and dynamic fast-moving project where results are delivered quickly to the client. IGS has assembled a world-class group of international geologists for this project but wants to strengthen its geological mapping component.

For the technical supervision of the geological mapping part of the project in Saudi Arabia we are seeking mapping geologists with significant working experience in structurally complex areas consisting of a wide variety of rocks (generally weakly to moderately metamorphic, deformed rocks of various compositions) and proven experience in quality control of reports AND geological datasets and/or cartographic products (maps, digital data packets). Experience in compiling geological maps and interpreting remote sensing data is an advantage.

About You

The successful candidates will be able to demonstrate the following:

Qualifications, Experience & Knowledge

  • Minimum MSc in geology.
  • Considerable and proven experience in systematic experience in systematic field mapping, working in a variety of countries on geological mapping projects.
  • Experience with digital geological mapping workflows, hardware and software.
  • Knowledge of Quality Control methods and workflows.
  • A PhD in geology would be desirable.
  • Published articles in peer reviewed geosciences journals would be advantageous.

Skills

  • High level of proficiency in ArcGIS Pro – this is a critical skill.
  • Ability to work and communicate well in teams and foster team cooperation.
  • Ability to work in high pressure and demanding situations.
  • High level of competency in English with excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Self-confidence, solutions focused and resourceful.
  • High level of diplomacy in dealing with clients and stakeholders.
  • Additional language skills in especially Arabic would be advantageous.

You must be prepared to travel extensively to a variety of countries. In the case of Saudi Arabia, you must be willing to work in the country for several months of the year on a rotational basis.

Pay and Conditions

IGS is offering various options in terms of employment, depending on each successful applicant’s specific circumstances, such as availability, experience, and qualifications. Applicants may either be employed directly by IGS as a member of staff, where applicable, or on part-time yearly renewable contracts as independent contractors.

IGS Employment

These are full-time roles (40 hours per week) fully remote working from home.  We offer a competitive salary of between £45,000 to £68,600 (depending on experience). In the case of Saudi Arabia, generous tax-free allowances for working in the country are also paid. We also offer 25 days annual leave with the opportunity to buy and sell leave; 5% employee/employer pension contributions, time off in lieu, group life insurance cover, as well as provide for special leave and flexible working arrangements, subject to company policy.  Eligibility to work and live in the UK will be essential.

Contractors

Consideration will be given to applicants interested in working on an independent contractor basis for IGS, which would be subject to individual negotiations and agreement. Part-time contractors are paid international competitive rates for work rotations in Saudi Arabia.
