Applications are invited from professionally qualified persons (GMC/ NMC/ HCPC registered) for the role of Sessional Clinical Skills Tutor at the University of Plymouth Peninsula Medical School (PMS).

An opportunity has arisen for immediate appointment with role commencement for academic year 2024-25 (September – June).

The Peninsula Medical School is an established and successful medical school. Key to the successes of the School and its students is the quality of opportunities and experiences available to students. The undergraduate medical programme is an innovative integrated spiral curriculum with clinical contact introduced at the outset of the 5-year programme.

You will help implement delivery of teaching and assessment of the clinical skills aspects of the undergraduate medical programme at PMS. You will work in collaboration with a dynamic team, representing a broad range of healthcare professions, to deliver and develop the full range of learning opportunities on offer to our students. The role incorporates teaching and assessment activities and is student facing.

Activities include system examination skills, life support skills, procedural skills, and communication skills. The role involves working with part-task trainer manikins, simulated patients and mid-to-hi fidelity simulation manikins to deliver a broad range of learning outcomes.

Implicit in the learning within clinical skills is the development of professional skills and attributes, and critical and clinical thinking in our students.

The role would suit those with an established interest in clinical education and/or those seeking an introduction into the practice of medical education.

Sessions are available weekly on Thursdays and are focused on our Year 1 undergraduate students.

There are 3 x 2-hour sessions available:

8.30am – 10.30am

10.30am – 12.30pm

1.00pm – 3.00pm

Applications are invited to fill one or more of the above sessions. Applicants must be able to commit to regular delivery, although the frequency of this commitment is negotiable. Tutors are paid an additional 1-hour preparation time per topic taught.

You must have a broad range of clinical experience in your profession and possess good communication and presentation skills. A Postgraduate Teaching qualification would be an advantage to the post, although not essential. You will be required demonstrate the ability to teach clinical skills to the highest standards.

You will have experience of delivering clinical education in your own profession.

Depending upon previous experience you may be required to undertake some initial training prior to the commencement of the post. This will be negotiated at appointment.

This role will require an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service Check plus an Adults’ Barred List check.

You must currently be registered with the following registration board: General Medical Council (GMC)

Please demonstrate how you meet the essential criteria outlined in the knowledge, qualifications, training and experience elements of the job description in your supporting statement.
