Scientific Editor, The Journal of Pathology and the Journal of Pathology: Clinical Research

The Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland

The Journal of Pathology is the leading journal in its field and The Journal of Pathology: Clinical Research is its Open Access companion journal. The Pathological Society is seeking a Scientific Editor to join an expanding Editorial team that manages submissions to both Journals. The role includes management of the peer review process, preparation of manuscripts for publication and interaction with the Journals’ publisher, Wiley. Candidates should have experience in post-Doctoral research in biomedical science. It is anticipated the salary will be in the academic Lecturer/Senior Lecturer range depending on experience.

Informal enquiries should be directed to Professor Louise Jones, Editor in Chief The Journal of Pathology (eic@jpathol.org), Professor C Simon Herrington, Editor in Chief The Journal of Pathology: Clinical Research (eic@jpatholclinres.org),  or Dr Richard Poulsom, Senior Scientific Editor (scied@jpathol.org).

Role specification

The Journal Pathology was founded in 1892 and is the leading journal in its field, with an Impact Factor of 5.6 (2024). The Journal of Pathology: Clinical Research is its Open Access companion journal, published since 2015, with an Impact Factor of 3.4 (2024).  The post of Scientific Editor has been created in response to the increasingly complex nature, and volume, of the material submitted to the Journals. This provides an excellent opportunity for a research scientist with post-Doctoral experience to bring research skills to a fresh challenge in publishing. The successful candidates will have the opportunity to develop their editorial skills and strengthen both Journals by working with the editorial teams, which currently comprise:

The Journal of Pathology

Editor in Chief – J Louise Jones

Editor in Chief Emeritus – C Simon Herrington

Senior Scientific Editor – Richard Poulsom

Senior and Reviews Editor – Philip Coates

Associate Editors – Ming Du, David Huntsman, Rachael Natrajan, Louise van der Weyden, Laura Wood, William Cross, Nasir Rajpoot, Angus Cameron and Stephen Robinson.

The Journal of Pathology: Clinical Research

Editor in Chief – C Simon Herrington

Senior Scientific Editor – Richard Poulsom

Associate Editors – Ricardo Lastra, Tilman Rau, Andres Matoso, Regina Lo and William Cross.

The main components of the role are:

  • (a) to assist the Senior Scientific Editor in managing the editorial functions of the Journals, in conjunction with the Editors in Chief
  • (b) to provide cover for the senior editorial team by mutual agreement; and to be prepared to act as final decision-maker on any papers for which an Editor-in-Chief is an author or otherwise conflicted
  • (c) to evaluate submitted contributions in accordance with editorial policy and in liaison with the editorial team select contributions suitable for external peer review
  • (d) to supervise the independent peer review of contributions
  • (e) to comply with editorial policy and all procedures and standards for the acceptance of manuscripts, contribute to editing of accepted articles, and assist with organising issues of The Journal of Pathology
  • (f) to meet and confer with the Publisher’s personnel at such times as the Publisher and the Society reasonably request (usually online, sometimes in person)
  • (g) to use an editorial office system, currently ScholarOne Manuscripts™, for the receipt of submissions and management of the review process, in liaison with the Editorial Office, the Editor-in-Chief and Editors. This requires significant periods working on-screen and online
  • (h) to attend (virtually or in person) such conferences as are deemed appropriate by, and agreed in advance with, the Society and the Publisher, to assist in the promotion of the Journal. Registration, travel and expenses will be paid from an expense budget agreed between the Society and the Publisher.
