Ranked in the world's top 50 universities, The University of Queensland (UQ) is one of Australia's leading research and teaching institutions. It has more than 55,000 students studying across four campuses and has an interdisciplinary community of 2,500 scientists and researchers who champion research excellence and continue UQ’s tradition of research leadership. It is a founding member of the Group of Eight (Go8) universities and one of only four Australian members of the global Universitas 21 consortium.
The University maintains a world-class, comprehensive program of research, innovation and research training. It has a long history of successful research partnerships with start-ups, local businesses, multinational corporations, governments, NGOs and other research institutions. It aspires to be a globally leading university for the commercialisation of IP.
Reporting directly to the Vice-Chancellor, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) is a crucial senior executive role with overarching responsibility for the University’s research and innovation-related portfolio. This includes leading research policy, ethics, strategic initiatives, infrastructure, grants, collaborations and researcher development. The role calls for high-level strategic capabilities; exceptional interpersonal, communication, negotiation and influencing skills; and a proven track-record of leadership in a large, research-intensive university.
The successful candidate will need to be a collaborator and networker with the ability to develop a deep understanding of the University’s culture and its research ecosystem. As a member of the Senior Executive Team, the DVC(R&I) will require a ‘university first’ perspective and the ability to think and act outside their own portfolio; while making a meaningful contribution to UQ’s broader strategic direction.
The new DVC(R&I) should possess the standing and interpersonal skills to work effectively across the entire institution with both academic and senior professional services teams. Strong personal research credentials will be required to ensure credibility and gain the respect of Executive Deans and Institute Directors, as well as the broader professoriate. Experience in developing multi-lateral partnerships with industry and government and in research translation and commercialisation are expected.
