Oxford Brookes University is looking for a part time (0.6FTE), permanent Speeches and Editorial Officer to join them. 

The role

The Speeches and Editorial Officer will draft speeches, presentations and other communications on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, members of the Vice-Chancellor’s Group, and other University staff, where there is strong benefit to the University’s profile and reputation, or an opportunity to influence policy debates. The post holder will also draft forewords and copy for key University events and publications which have a significant impact on a wide external audience, including our graduation ceremonies, the annual Financial Statements and Prospectus.

About the team

By unifying all marketing, communications, recruitment and engagement activity, the Marketing, Recruitment and Engagement Directorate makes a measurable difference to the experience of staff, prospective students, students and alumni. The Directorate is confident and ambitious, applying professional skills and expertise to make every contact count and to make a valued contribution to the University’s objectives.

As part of the Marketing, Recruitment and Engagement Directorate, the Communications team provides leadership and advice to the University on both internal and external communications. This includes building the profile and reputation of the University amongst the media, contributing to and influencing external policy debates, communicating with our students, staff and alumni, and organising key events to effectively engage the University’s diverse stakeholders.

What will I be doing?

  • Write speeches and content for the Vice-Chancellor and senior staff, ensuring key messages align with the University’s goals.
  • Create strategies to position the University effectively within the higher education sector and respond to national and international issues.
  • Conduct research and work with various stakeholders to ensure all content is accurate, relevant, and impactful.
  • Review and provide feedback on content created by others, ensuring clarity and effectiveness.
  • Keep up with UK current affairs, especially in education, to ensure communications are timely and relevant.

What skills do I need?

  • Ability to craft clear, engaging, and strategic content tailored to diverse audiences.
  • Capable of conducting thorough research to support speech and article content.
  • Strong proof-reading skills and ability to spot potential issues in content.
  • Effective teamwork, with the flexibility to manage multiple projects and adjust to changing priorities.
