We have an exciting opportunity in the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering for a dedicated Research Associate to join our Innovate UK-funded project “Safe, Sustainable, and Swift Reconstruction of Ukraine”. This project, in collaboration with leading UK and Ukrainian universities and industrial partners, aims to develop innovative solutions to upcycle the immense amount of rubble generated by the war into sustainable building materials.

You will have a PhD in Civil and Structural Engineering, Materials Science or related field, and possess good knowledge of concrete technology and structural use of concrete. As your primary tasks will include designing and evaluating concrete mixes for different structural applications, targeting both short-term and long-term performance, you will have good experience in conducting independent experimental research studies in this field. You will apply analytical or numerical models to predict the performance of RCA-concrete and inform the development of innovative treatment and separation processes for durable and sustainable structures. Additionally, you will conduct a techno-economic assessment to evaluate the benefits of using RCA in concrete production and identify optimal pathways for the upcycling of end-of-life concrete.

You will work closely with the project partners, attend progress meetings, communicate research findings, and actively contribute to the activities of the research group. You will prepare reports and peer-reviewed scientific papers describing the outcome of the research for publication and presentation at conferences.

This post is fixed term for a maximum duration of 18 months full-time ending on or before 31th March 2026.
