The Settlement has three core areas of work which are spread over 3 sites, Stratford, Southwark and Holborn.

Purpose of the role

The role of an IT tutor at an adult learning centre is multifaceted and pivotal in bridging the digital divide. As an educator and mentor, the IT tutor is responsible for designing and delivering comprehensive lessons that cater to the diverse technological needs of adult learners. The aim is to equip students with essential digital skills that can enhance their employability, enrich their personal lives, and enable them to engage confidently with the ever-evolving digital world.

Furthermore, the IT tutor plays a crucial role in fostering an environment of continuous learning and curiosity. By providing support and guidance, the tutor helps adult learners to overcome any apprehension towards technology, encouraging them to explore and master new digital tools. This position not only demands a deep understanding of information technology but also requires patience, adaptability, and a passion for teaching, ensuring that every student can achieve their full potential in the digital age.

Participate in training that is needed for the role, identify training and development requirements and attend an appraisal and review each year.

Job Description

The tutor will be expected to:

  1. Be fully conversant with all aspects of Microsoft 365 and its applications, all aspects of the delivery of IT qualifications such as Essential Digital Skills and ICDL at different levels. Take responsibility for planning and preparing courses, including the production of class notes and sample exercises, monitoring the progress and achievement of students, giving feedback both written and verbal, under departmental guidelines. Update his/her subject specific skills, as required To deliver exams attached to the course and qualification. Teach the Course Act in a reliable and professional manner at all times. Devise methods of working which will suit all students. Assess student progress throughout the course and give feedback to students Attend Departmental meetings. Carry out administrative tasks required of the tutor (for example, record-keeping and end-of-course evaluation). Ability to work with digital technologies in their teaching practice, including online course delivery via Zoom or similar platform, or a willingness to undertake training to develop their skills in this area.

Person Specification

  1. Successful applicants will:Be a practitioner with extensive knowledge, expertise and understanding of all aspects of Microsoft 365, including Office applications such Word, Excel and PowerPoint to effectively teach IT or/and business courses.
  2. Hold the correct qualifications Have proven experience in adult education, or relevant experience in leading groups of adults from a variety of different backgrounds. Demonstrate understanding of the ethos of adult education. Have a recognised qualification in teaching adults, or be committed to acquiring a qualification in the next two years. Know how to structure and deliver a course, and how to monitor and evaluate it. Have the following teaching skills:
    i. good communication skills
    ii.ability to work with mixed ability groups
    iii.strategies for assessing student progress and achievement

Experience of working with digital technologies in their teaching practice, including online course delivery via Zoom or similar platform, or a willingness to undertake training to develop their skills in this area. Be prepared to reflect on and improve their teaching practice.
