We are now looking for an individual with background in molecular biology to retrain with us as a Specialist Inspector. This role is offered on a full-time, permanent basis. Part-time opportunities (minimum of 0.8 FTE) are also available.

This is an incredible opportunity for a high calibre molecular biologist with experience in modern molecular/GM techniques and laboratory safety to re-focus their career and take on an inspector position with our essential organisation.

You’ll be supported through a Specialist Training Programme (STP) to gain the skills and expertise to become a safety inspector. You will enrol on the STP and undertake a combination of study, practical experience and a final assessment ensuring you are equipped to operate at the forefront of your specialist area.

The Role

As a Specialist Inspector, after completing our Specialist Training Programme, you will use your expert knowledge to assess the safety of facilities handling hazardous microorganisms and genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

This varied role will see you contributing to the delivery of our national intervention programme. You’ll carry out inspections, investigate accidents and incidents, undertake technical reviews of submissions and risk assessments, handle enforcement action and prepare technical reports.

You’ll provide specialist advice within HSE, to other parts of government, research and industry and other stakeholders, delivering guidance on the risk and control of new and emerging infectious diseases in the workplace and offering technical training to a range of audiences.

Please note, enrolment in the Specialist Training Programme (STP) is a legal requirement that you will be required to study for and successfully complete.

About You

To be considered as a Specialist Inspector, you will need:

  • Extensive practical experience of a range of modern molecular/GM techniques applied in a relevant molecular biology area
  • In-depth knowledge of a range of modern molecular/GM techniques as applied to a relevant area of molecular biology
  • A track record of relevant peer-reviewed publications
  • An understanding of the safe operation of a CL2, CL3 or CL4 laboratory environment
  • Strong communication skills to produce written reports and influence change at all levels
  • Good organisational and planning skills
  • A PhD in an appropriate molecular biological sciences subject
  • A full, valid driving licence
