Director of Academic Development and Research

An opportunity has risen to join our Senior Academic Team as a Director of Academic Development and Research, a pivotal role in the delivery of teaching excellence and academic enhancement through leadership of academic staff training and development. As Director, you will also lead on the development of a research and enterprise environment including delivery of the University’s applied research activities to ensure research informed teaching across the University, the development of training for academics to enhance academic and pedagogic innovation and supporting the submission of the Teaching Excellence Framework submission

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead on the delivery of the University’s’ training activities relating to pedagogic practice, academic development, teaching and learning projects and the evaluation of pedagogic practice to ensure teaching excellence.
  • In consultation with the Director of Education, foster sector-leading innovation in programme design and delivery, together with supporting training for programme design and delivery.
  • Develop an annual programme of academic training and development to stimulate and challenge academic colleagues ensuring the highest levels of staff participation and engagement.
  • Monitor and develop appropriate mechanisms to ensure that staff are appropriately supported in their academic and pedagogic development.
  • Support the PVC/ DVC/ VC in developing a University Research, Enterprise and Scholarship strategy and environment including relevant policies.
  • Work in partnership with the People & OD Team on areas of joint policy responsibility such as but not limited to educational sponsorship and promotions. 

We are looking for individuals who are/have:

  • The ability to identify and use a range of quality enhancement interventions to achieve resulting improvements in learning, teaching and quality outcomes in a University or Academic environment.
  • Substantial experience of working at a senior level as an academic in the university sector.
  • Significant people management, particularly motivation and development and teaching experience in an academic environment.
  • The ability to establish external relationships and professional networks with other senior level education quality enhancement professionals, to inform decisions and actions to tangibly improve student engagement, learning, overall experience and ultimately education outcomes for the University and students alike.
  • Senior Fellow HEA or equivalent and PhD qualified.
