Background

Birmingham Business School is seeking to appoint an Associate Professor in Accounting to contribute towards leadership and delivery of research, teaching, engagement and impact in the School.

The Department of Accounting is a dynamic team of scholars producing internationally excellent research and providing outstanding teaching for our students. We deliver a BSc Accounting and Finance, an MSc Accounting and Finance, and a newly launched MSc Business Analytics, attracting high quality students and consistently performing exceptionally well in student satisfaction ratings. We also have a thriving community of PhD students, who are actively involved in the research life of the Department and School. Department members conduct research across a wide spectrum of accounting topics, with particular focus on interdisciplinary perspectives and interpretive/critical theoretical approaches. 

We welcome applications from established scholars with research and teaching interests on any topics across the accounting discipline, including (but not limited to) sustainability accounting, business analytics, taxation, management accounting, financial accounting, auditing, public sector and NGO accounting.

Main Duties

  • Develop, plan and lead research activities and programmes of outstanding quality and international repute in the accounting discipline, publishing high-quality internationally recognised research outputs.
  • Contribute to delivery and development of the department’s portfolio of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, using innovative research-led teaching to inspire and engage students.
  • Provide leadership around the generation of research income, working with colleagues to maximise external funding opportunities.
  • Develop and lead collaborative working arrangements with colleagues across the Department, School and wider University to deliver outstanding research and teaching.

Person Specification

  • Normally, a higher degree relevant to the research/teaching area (usually PhD) or equivalent qualifications. 
  • Strong and sustained international research and education profile, evidenced by a substantial record of international quality outputs and external grants.
  • Proven ability to plan and lead the delivery of innovative research-led teaching.
  • Track record of attracting and successfully supervising high quality doctoral students.
  • Demonstrable interest in translating research into societal impact through engagement with policy and practice.
