Exposure to traumatic events like disasters is a major risk factor for poor mental health. However, understanding of the pre-existing factors that contribute to better or worse mental health following such experiences is limited. This PhD will use data from a study of more than 4000 individuals who were born in Pelotas, Brazil, in 2004 and have been tracked over time. The population of Pelotas was exposed to catastrophic flooding in May 2024, with mental health responses to this disaster being captured for study participants. This PhD will comprise a unique study of the pre-existing risk/resilience factors, including psychological/social/biological processes measured since birth, that influence post-disaster mental health. The project could also be extended to consider consequences for climate-related anxiety and behaviours.
Funding includes:
- A Research & Training Support Grant (RTSG) valued between £2-5k per year
- A £300 annual travel and conference grant based on a 4 year, full-time studentship
