Postdoc in Development of a Theoretical Framework for Microstructural Engineering in Metal Additive Manufacturing

Technical University of Denmark - Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering

Location: Lyngby - Denmark
Salary: Based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 4th September 2024
Closes: 24th September 2024

DTU, Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering, the section for Manufacturing Engineering has a vacant 2-year postdoc position within the Villum Investigator project ‘Microstructural Engineering of Additive Manufactured Metals - MicroAM.

One of MicroAM project aims, which is the central focus of this position, is to develop a theoretical framework that includes the effects of the as-built microstructure, multi-scale voids and local residual stresses in microstructural engineering of additively manufactured (AM) metallic samples, and that addresses the local microstructural evolution during exposure to mechanical, thermal and corrosive stimuli/loads thus laying the foundation for design of AM-defect tolerant microstructures. The work will be based primarily on experimental work but indeed it will be guided by advanced AM simulations. The latter being the responsibility of other participants of the MicroAM project.

Responsibilities and qualifications

The responsibilities of the Postdoc will be:

  • To atomize steel powders tailored for laser powder bed fusion printing of steels
  • To print 316L stainless steel samples with parameters selected to form the basis for the development of the theoretical framework
  • To link the powder/printing parameters, the microstructural characteristics and the resulting mechanical properties
  • To perform non-destructive 3D and 4D characterizations of the microstructural evolution during straining and annealing
  • To develop the theoretical framework for designing defect tolerant microstructures that can cope well during subsequent in-service use

You will work in close collaboration with a group of senior scientists, technicians as well as Postdocs and PhD students. Also, the work will involve collaboration with selected external partners.

You must demonstrate a strong background within the following topics:

  • Additive manufacturing
  • Powder metallurgy
  • Microstructural characterization
  • Mechanical testing
  • Crystallography
  • Physical Metallurgy

Excellent English communication skills are also essential.

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).

Salary and terms of employment

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.
