Sciences Po

Location: Paris - France

Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 2nd September 2024

JOB DESCRIPTION

Sciences Po (Paris, France) is seeking a full-time Assistant Professor (tenure-track), beginning on January 1st 2025. The successful candidate will be affiliated to the Center for Research on social InequalitieS (CRIS).

The center is committed to theory-driven empirical research on social inequality, drawing on a diversity of methods (qualitative, quantitative, experimental, comparative, etc.), adopting a variety of lenses (micro, meso, macro) and promoting interdisciplinarity for an integrated approach to the study of inequality in the social sciences.

Our research program seeks to measure patterns and trends of inequality, analyze their underlying mechanisms, and inform and contribute to policy analysis. Our faculty members are international experts on central social inequality domains, such as education, life course dynamics, labor market and economic inequalities, social mobility, urban segregation, migrations, cultural consumption, digital, health, and environmental inequality.

This assistant professorship position is designed to reinforce and complement our expertise in the study of environmental inequalities. We welcome applications from candidates with a recent PhD in the social or environmental sciences and with an ambitious research agenda in the area of social stratification and inequality, targeting publications in leading disciplinary and interdisciplinary journals. All disciplines are welcome as far as the research has strong connections with the social sciences.

Rising inequality and environmental degradation are two critical challenges of our time. Our knowledge about the interplay between socio-economic inequality, environmental degradation, and environmental policies remains limited. More research is needed to measure these inequalities, understand their micro-, meso- and macro-level mechanisms, and identify policies to address them. Three research domains are particularly relevant to this position: inequalities in contributions to environmental damage; inequalities in the impacts of environmental degradation; and inequalities in the capacities to impact environmental policies.

This position will contribute to strengthening environmental research and teaching in the context of the Sciences Po TIERED project (Transforming Interdisciplinary Education and Research for Evolving Democracies).

DUTIES

The successful candidate will be expected to play an active role in the center’s collective activities: seminars, academic events, participation in research networks.

The candidate should also engage in responding to national and international calls to fund research projects.

Teaching load on Sciences Po’s undergraduate and graduate programs (in Paris and in other campuses):

  • For 2025-2028: 2 courses with 24 contact hours each per year, 40 hours per year of other academic duties;
  • From 2028-onwards: 3 courses with 24 contact hours each per year, 56 hours per year of other academic duties.

RECRUITMENT PROCESS

Applications are due by September 30, 2024. Candidates should have a PhD (or should complete it before September 30, 2024). Submissions must include:

  • CV with a list of publications
  • motivation letter
  • Research statement (2 pages)
  • Short Teaching statement (1 page)
  • Up to 2 significant publications chosen by the candidate
  • The name of two academic referees

Applications should be sent to: linda.amrani@sciencespo.fr

Shortlisted candidates will present a research paper at the job talks that will take place in Paris, in December 2024 (public auditions).
