The School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering (MAC) at the University of Sheffield (TUoS) invites applications from outstanding and ambitious candidates for a position in Geotechnical Engineering at the Professorial level.

The Geotechnical Engineering Group at Sheffield undertakes world leading research on natural and engineered slopes (on and offshore), embankment dams, and flood/sea defence levees using both physical and numerical modelling and supported by the application of advanced optimisation techniques. We seek a talented individual with complementary and synergistic strengths to further enhance our research capability. Applicants with a strong physical/centrifuge modelling background, an interest in low carbon/nature based solutions, offshore geotechnics, and infrastructure performance and resilience are especially welcome.

The School has high quality geotechnical laboratory and physical modelling facilities including, at our Broad Lane site, an advanced soil element testing laboratory, transparent soil (laser) laboratory and a 4 m diameter beam centrifuge. The School is also home to the Integrated Civil and infrastructure Research Centre (iCAIR), part of the UK Collaboratorium for Research on Infrastructure and Cities (UKCRIC), where large scale physical testing on soil-water-structure problems can be carried out. Together, these offer a huge potential to develop and deepen experimental research interests across a range of geo-related problems.

You will be a research leader in geotechnical engineering with experience of interdisciplinary collaboration. Working closely with colleagues in the Geotechnical Engineering Group, and leveraging our substantial laboratory facilities, you will contribute to positioning the group at the forefront of geotechnical research, innovation, and impact, nationally and internationally.

You should have a real passion to deliver high quality teaching at all levels and an openness to new ways of delivery and assessment. You will contribute to the development and delivery of a high quality geotechnical syllabus integrating climate change challenges, digitalisation, and multi-disciplinary working.
