The Role

We are seeking an excellent academic to join our staff as a Lecturer in Education (with Specialism in Education Guidance Counselling). The candidate should have a Doctorate in Education (or cognate area) or be nearing completion of their Doctorate. The preferred candidate will be expected to make a strong contribution to the teaching and research programmes of the Department, undertaking teaching duties on the Department’s Education Guidance Counselling programme and the Initial Teacher Education programmes at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. They will also be expected to contribute to Master’s and Doctoral level modules and supervision as well as conduct placement supervision if required. They will have the theoretical and professional knowledge required to develop student guidance counsellors in Education Guidance Counselling and support their practice in classrooms and schools. Experience of working in teacher and counsellor education and researching into school-based settings is highly desirable. The preferred candidate will also be able to work collaboratively in supporting the collegial work of the Department and to assume administrative and course leadership duties, in particular on Education Guidance Counselling and as required on the Department’s programmes.

The appointee will be expected to build a strong research profile that supports the University’s research strategy, including affiliating to the Research Institutes, where appropriate, and working with colleagues on national and international research. The appointee will be expected to sustain and conduct research, engage in scholarship of quality and substance, undertake engaged research, and generate publications of international standard. They will be expected to supervise research students up to doctoral level. The person appointed will have a record of teaching, research, and publication, appropriate to career stage.

Salary

Assistant Professor / Lecturer: €40,182 – €69,195 p.a. (14 points)
Assistant Lecturer)*: €62,233 – €98,548 p.a. (7 points)

Appointments will be made in accordance with public sector pay provisions.

The ideal candidate will have:

Essential

  • A Doctorate in Education (or cognate area such as Guidance Counselling, Counselling Psychology or Psychotherapy) or will be nearing completion of a Doctorate;
  • Specialist current knowledge and expertise in Education Guidance Counselling; and/or specialist knowledge in the provision of counselling students preferably in second-level schools, or colleges
  • Registration with the Institute of Guidance Counsellors or cognate body, nationally or internationally
  • Experience of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and assessment, programme development and academic innovation, preferably with an emphasis on counsellor education and/or teacher education ;
  • Experience of supervising graduate research students;
  • Experience of supervising personal and/or vocational guidance and counselling practices or practising under the supervision of a qualified counsellor/psychotherapist
  • Experience of curriculum, pedagogy and assessment in the promotion of innovative approaches to Education Guidance Counselling;
  • Experience of teaching reflexivity, group work and counselling in education;
  • Familiarity with pedagogy and practice in a counselling skills approach to guidance;
  • Experience of working with relevant stakeholders to develop Education Guidance Counselling;
  • Good understanding of the wider Education Guidance Counselling landscape;
  • Scholarly research outputs and track record appropriate to career stage, with an emphasis on school-based research;
  • Experience of, and commitment to, working in an interdisciplinary setting;
  • Excellent administrative, organisational, teamwork and communication skills.
