ROLE DESCRIPTION

Contract: Part-time, 7 hours per week (0.2FTE), 1 year fixed-term contract

Location: Sotheby’s Institute of Art - London (30 Bedford Square, WC1B 3EE)

Main Purpose of Role

This role is part of the Student Support team, reporting to the Head of Counselling and Student Support. The role is for 7 hours per week, additional hours may be available ad hoc at peak times. It is likely that the hours will be worked across two days per week, late afternoon/ early evening to meet students after classes.

Main duties of the role include the following:

  • Conduct learning needs assessment and development of Individual Learning Plans (ILP) for students.
  • Provide specialist professional activities for students with Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD)/ Neurodiversity who present with a range of profiles and related issues.
  • Work within academic standards, delivering individualised and flexible programmes of support in accordance with the agreed ILP. This should enhance student abilities to develop independent learning and study skills strategies, using all available assistive and IT technologies.
  • Provide advice and guidance where necessary and appropriate, for colleagues to ensure that support is accessible and inclusive for neurodiverse students.
  • Contribute to delivery of awareness training and good practice in supporting students who are neurodiverse, to colleagues
  • Deliver specialist, non-subject-specific, study skills tuition on an individual basis to students who have SpLD’s/ neurodiversity to facilitate independent learning and in small groups to the wider community.
  • Make use of the virtual learning environment, e-learning tools and IT in accordance with pedagogic protocols.
  • Facilitate students to use available specialist assistive technology, IT and other resources to develop their study and strategy skills.
  • Monitor and review progress to help with individual student development.
  • To advise on any further adjustments that may be required as part of the support plan in collaboration with the Head of Counselling and Student Support.
  • To arrange appointments, keep accurate records of contact and session notes, in-line with record keeping procedures and sharing arrangements.
  • To liaise with colleagues to facilitate holistic and appropriate support for neurodiverse students.
  • To screen students for indicators of neurodiversity and where further investigation is indicated, advise on the diagnostic assessment options and signpost externally.
  • To work within the National Association of Disability Professionals (NADP), or equivalent professional body, code of practice and the regulations relevant to this role https://nadp-uk.org/join-nadp/code-of-practice
  • To have and maintain, up-to-date quality assured membership of a DSA recognised professional body for example: ADSHE, PATOSS, Dyslexia Guild and BDA.
  • To engage in Continuing Professional Development, ensuring knowledge is up-to-date and informed by sector and technological developments, and in line with the requirements of their professional membership body.
  • To apply inclusive practices which recognise the diversity of our student population and demonstrate a broad understanding of the subject disciplines taught at SIAL.
  • The role would involve the expectation of working within the context of the Institutes Safeguarding policy and procedures.
  • To report any issues of concern promptly to the Head of Counselling and Student Support, Registrar or Head of Quality.
  • To signpost and refer students on when appropriate.
  • To attend team meetings and occasional academic standards committee meetings as required.
  • To deliver specialist study skills sessions both in-person and online as required.

The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.

Person Specification

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent with a recognised teaching qualification
  • Additional recognised qualification for providing specialist study skills support to SpLD and neurodiverse students
  • Good working knowledge of the education provisions of the Equality Act (2010) and of General Data Protection Regulation
  • Clear understanding of the barriers/difficulties that students who are neurodiverse, or have another Specific Learning Difficulty (SpLD), may encounter in studying at undergraduate/postgraduate level
  • IT skills, including good working knowledge of MS Office packages (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint); assistive technology relevant to students who are neurodiverse; Chatbot GPT and other AI
  • Conducting impact and needs assessments for the development of ILPs
  • Experience of teaching students who are neurodiverse or have another Specific Learning Difficulty (SpLD). This experience should be within HE, ideally art history related programmes and include use of assistive technologies
  • Experience of empowering students to identify their study needs and develop strategies to overcome them where possible
  • Experience of successfully dealing with difficult situations, the anxieties of others and confidential matters, according to policy and procedure
