The University of Manchester invites applications for a Teaching and Research position within the Department of Materials. Positioned as one of the few Russell Group universities with a dedicated Fashion Business and Technology discipline, we are at the forefront of integrating fashion technology with business strategies and leading advancements in the fashion industry. We are looking to appoint an academic (at either Lecturer, Senior Lecturer or Reader level) in the field of fashion technology and innovation, who is committed to helping shape our strategic vision and contribute to our expanding academic portfolio through both research and teaching.

You will join an experienced and diverse team, leading the development of significant research projects, and delivering teaching across our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Your role will be critical in shaping our academic agenda and enhancing the student learning experience. In addition, you will develop new research initiatives and contribute to high-quality publications, actively supporting the School’s objectives in the Research Excellence Framework (REF).

Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent in Fashion or a related discipline, with a research record commensurate to the level of the position sought. Candidates should exhibit the capability to achieve and maintain internationally recognised standards of research excellence.

Research focus areas

We seek expertise in various specialised areas within the fashion sector, including, but not limited to;

  • Fashion Technology (Textiles and Product Development): Investigating advancements in textile technology that impact design, manufacturing, and circularity within the fashion sector; researching the technical aspects of garment production and product innovation in materials, biomaterials, and manufacturing processes.
  • Fashion Sustainability: Research initiatives that enhance sustainable practices within the fashion industry, promoting ethical, social and environmental responsibility, including regulations and compliance.
  • Digital Fashion: Exploring the intersection of fashion and digital technology, including phygital fashion experiences, Artificial Intelligence, consumer psychology and the metaverse.
  • Fashion Business: Research advancements in fashion business across different sectors, including luxury, including data analysis, fashion social responsibility and activism.
