Description of the role:

The Te Temu Tuarua | Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation) is responsible for advancing the University’s research and innovation objectives and impact. This includes increasing external research funding, ensuring that relevant research policies are in place and enhancing societal impact through commercialisation and other appropriate research engagement activities. Reporting to the Vice-Chancellor and working with Faculty Executive Deans and the DVC (Academic), the DVC (R&I) will build the University’s national and international research stature and impact.

Lead research and innovation in New Zealand’s second oldest University.

Develop and lead the Research and Innovation Strategy in a growing, dynamic University located in New Zealand’s fastest growing region

Deliver outcomes in the research impact and commercialisation of university intellectual property.

The Position 

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (R&I) at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury is responsible for developing and implementing the University’s research and innovation strategy, ensuring that research policies, plans, and processes build upon Canterbury’s distinctive contributions to national and global significant research. Reporting to the Vice-Chancellor, this role will provide advice on research policy and strategy, promote research, research training and engagement with government, industry, other universities and research institutes to foster a high-performance research culture that raises research productivity and impact. 

The successful candidate will demonstrate strong research leadership and management capabilities that engages internal and external stakeholders to achieve a whole of university approach to implementing the University’s Research and Innovation Strategy. You will have a track record of translating strategy into successful delivery, strong communication and people skills, with strong experience in engagement with industry, government and other stakeholders. Also important are, the capacity to secure external funding and build industry and other partnerships locally and internationally. 

The successful candidate will be appointed to the Te Temu Tuarua | Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation) position as a term appointment (usually five years).
